Since May, 2002, KO Telehealth has been helping to deliver telemedicine services to remote First Nation Communities in Northwestern Ontario. We are currently working towards expanding this healthcare innovation from the initial five participating communities to an additional 19 First Nation communties in
the Sioux Lookout Health Zone
.

KO Telehealth uses telemedicine workstations which have patient cameras, stethoscopes, and otoscopes attached.  Our goal is to improve First Nations access to health professionals and health programming.

KO Telehealth is part of the community health system. Its main goals are to improve community well-being, enhance the level and quality of community services and to reduce isolation for First Nations health workers.

KO Telehealth has the goal to improve and enhance health care by helping facilitate and integrate partnerships between the communities, funding agencies, health care organizations, teaching institutions and others interested in promoting First Nation health care

In order to build relationships, knowledge of the mandates for the federal and provincial governments must be understood in order to access services. Communication within the Canadian governance model does not always allow for a synergistic approach for finding ways to maximize health care resources. First Nation health care consists of a complex matrix that incorporates numerous federal and provincial departments that have separate budgets and mandates however are working towards the common goal of long term health care equitability.

The KO Telehealth Sustainability Committee is working towards identifying the key individuals which are affected by the First Nation Health Care Matrix and bring them together in order to discuss the most effective and efficient use of the resources available in order to sustain and grow Telehealth Services in the First Nation Communities.

The KO Telehealth Evaluation Framework has taken an integrated approach to ensure that the evaluation techniques and methods will be meaningful to the community members along with providing reliable and relevant information for funding agencies for long term sustainability.
